However the Persona series centers around groups of teenagers who have the ability to summon facets of their psyche, known as Personas, into being. The game draws many elements from Jungian psychology and various Jungian archetypes.

As a role-playing series, Persona consistently follows a group of teenagers doing extraordinary things. As a social simulator, it places heavy emphasis on building meaningful bonds — and more impressively, succeeds. It is the JRPG genre at its finest, combining confidence and style with engrossing storytelling.
The series celebrates both its 20th anniversary this year and the release of its next main entry, Persona 5 , which launches Sept. Each Persona game is a contained experience that stands on its own. Developer and publisher Atlus eventually rebranded that game to Shin Megami Tensei: Persona with updated content. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona laid the groundwork for the Persona franchise.
You would think, after having played through the original game and the re-release with bonus content entitled Persona 3: FES that I’d be sick of this title—but amazingly enough, I’m not. When I said I’d write this review I told Brad “I’ve played this game twice already—I’ll just run through a few hours to see what’s different and write it up. That plan to spend a few hours on it has expanded into 40 hours of playtime so far.
This new release is the same Persona 3 many of us fell in love with on the PlayStation 2, only with some tweaks that make it portable friendly. Since I wrote extensively about the game back in you can find the review here on the site I’m not going to spend time talking about the story or gameplay mechanics—which are largely unchanged—but instead focus on what is new and different this time around.
The biggest addition to the portable version is the new female protagonist.

There are even a few extra changes for Western audiences. Here’s everything you need to know about the new features and characters to judge whether it’s worth picking up. You still play as the Phantom Thieves, a ragtag group of high school students, attempting to rid Japan of corruption. However, there are more than a few changes in the new title in combat, story, location, confidants, and the like. There are enough alterations to make Persona 5 Royal completely fresh, even amongst those who enjoyed the original game.
Amongst the numerous additions, the most affecting is Kasumi Yoshizawa, the newest member of the Phantom Thieves. There are also a few North American specific changes like altering homophobic dialogue that was present in the original Persona 5 and the anime adaptation. The original game presented two gay men as predatory towards Ryuji, a high school student. Akechi will also have an expanded storyline, gaining personal events where he hangs out with the Protagonist, opposed to the first game where his confidant ranking increased automatically.
Persona 5 vanilla edition has a lot of DLC, tons of costumes for the Phantom Thieves to put on their varied bodies. Nobody has to re-buy a single thing! Score one for wallets everywhere! Even five years out it feels like the characters are still going strong, but all things must come to an end, right? Persona 6 is allegedly on the horizon.

When you sit down with something that falls into the genre of role-playing games, how much of a role are you willing to play? Are you simply sitting down to walk around, explore a bit, talk to some folks, get an idea of where to walk to next, and fight some monsters on the way to getting there? This has been the template for the role-playing game since, oh, about the time Dragon Warrior hit the NES. Countless role-playing games have toyed with the formula in various ways, but for the most part, that’s what you’re getting.
Still, the very name assigned to the genre of role-playing titles suggests that such games could encompass so much more. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 , originally released midway through last year, explores one of the ways in which role-playing can go beyond battling monsters and engaging in inane dialogue with characters that’ll be dead in a plot point or two anyway.
